Little Red Riding Hood

For Peekabook

This is an interactive retelling of a classic tale created for Peekabook, an innovative app offering interactive storytelling and discovery experiences for children aged 3 and up.

I was responsible for the illustration, animation, user experience and sound design of the book from start to end.

Balancing sequential storytelling with open-ended exploration and discovery

Little Red Riding hood was designed in line with the Peekabook app’s goals - with its open-ended canvas format, it seeks to create experiences that center learning through discovery and exploration.

With that in mind, I ensured that the composition and design of the canvas guided the linear unfolding of the story, while leaving room for readers to wander and uncover delightful little surprises.

Smartphone Frame Vector

The Peekabook team and I opted for a long scrolling canvas format, to lend a sense of sequencing to the story. I composed the illustration to intuitively lead readers along the flow of the story, with numbered frames marking key story points not to be missed.

I also peppered fun animations and hidden clues to the story across the canvas to complement the main story narration, creating intrigue and a satisfying discovery experience.

Working alongside Tse Pei was an exceptional experience. She overcame technical limitations to conceptualise and illustrate a first-of-its-kind long-scrolling book format for Peekabook, an interactive educational toy offering storytelling and discovery experiences for children. It was a groundbreaking storytelling approach that truly set our project apart. Her proactive approach to developing the book experience and meticulous attention to detail greatly contributed to the success of our collaborative efforts.

If you are considering Tse Pei for your own project, I highly recommend her services. She is not only reliable and efficient but also genuinely values and incorporates feedback, always striving to enhance the overall quality of the work. She is an invaluable asset to any creative endeavour.

The Source Academy

I led the project team to create an immersive sci-fi fictional world for the educational contents of a computer science module to come alive within.

Taking inspiration from the format of visual novel games, humorous and light-hearted stories were crafted within this fictional world, culminating in a weekly mission that contains a challenge for students to complete as part of the coursework.

Creating an immersive parallel world

I was responsible for setting the design direction of the project. I wanted the fictional world to provide a novel and fun counterpoint to the otherwise serious and technical educational content, while still being relatable.

In the in-game reality, students play as cadets in the prestigious intergalactic school - The Source Academy, where they learn to harness the power of the mysterious Source energy to manipulate reality. We created a set of key locations and characters to bring the story to life, including in-game alter egos of their lecturers.

Designing with room for future developments

The visual novel format was chosen primarily because it allows for easy editing of the story content, which is conveyed through text. We also created a library of assets, including different skins for the environment (e.g. normal state and emergency state), and 15 expression sets for each character, enabling the teaching team flexibility to edit or re-craft the content according to their teaching needs.

My experience with Tse Pei was extremely positive. At the beginning of the project, my requirements and ideas were very hazy and inconsistent. She worked with my team to clarify the deliverables, set up a timeline, and hire team members in the artistic team. She single-handedly defined the artistic concepts and the technical deployment of the system.

Tse Pei was instrumental in the success of Source Academy. Year after year, we read enthusiastic student comments on the quality of the Source Academy game and the level of engagement it’s achieved. I can recommend Tse Pei highly and with very high confidence.

Future-Ready & Sustainable Nursing Homes

I created these illustrations for an architecture-led research project I was involved in, as a design researcher and illustrator, while I was working at NUS. The project explores how we might move from a current institutional model of nursing homes to a home-like model that is integrated with the community.

The illustrations were created to accompany the proposal of future visions of nursing homes, highlighting aspects of community integration.

The Community Interlace

The Community Interlace features a mixed-use development that integrates retail services and nursing home facilities in the same building, drawing people from the community in. It also makes daily amenities more accessible to nursing home residents, enabling residents to stay connected to the hum of daily life.

I illustrated over a low-fidelity architecture model, crafting scenes that showcased the intermingling of different users in the space, as well as highlighting the vibrancy and inclusivity of the space.

The Care Corridor

Envisioning a future concept where nursing care infrastructure are integrated seamlessly into public HDB housing to support the full spectrum of care needs while enabling ageing-in-place.

The key aim I had was to paint the picture of a vibrant, and integrated intergenerational community, and illustrate features that enable key experience principles the team had envisioned. These included features such as enhancing accessibility with a car-free urban design, catering for different physical needs by having ample resting spaces, reducing the burden of delivering services by integrating autonomous technology.
